Starting Over - November 19, 2022

I've been paddling open boats for 15-years, and people rarely question my ability to do a trip. I know what I am capable of, and people accept my judgment. I don't get myself in over my head.

Things are different as I start paddling my new sea kayak. I saw a RICKA Sea Kayak trip at Fort Wetherill posted on the message board. It was posted as level 3 trip, and the conditions looked OK to me – 2 to 3 foot waves with winds out of the SW at 10 knots. Not flat, but not too wild either - pretty much what you would expect this time of year.

I posted what I thought would be a courtesy response asking if the trip would be appropriate for a newer paddler. To my surprise, the answer came back NO. Conditions will be challenging - best to start with something "milder". Ouch - was I that far off the mark?

I understand that the leader gets to decide who goes on trips, and I don’t want them to “dumb-down” the trip just to bring me along (there was talk of surfing and rock gardening). I also don’t want to be one of those people who is always in over their head, but how do you know until you try? Maybe I have an overinflated view of my abilities, but I was hoping not to have to start off at the very beginning.

Anyway, I did get out in my sea kayak today – edging practice down at Lincoln Woods.
